In today's world of connectivity we have different applications runs on different devices.These applications exchange data from each other.

We can :

1. Place an order
2. Book online tickets
3. Compare shopping prices
etc..etc from any part of the world online via different applications.

But imagine how this become possible to exchange data from different applications securely and effectively.

This became possible by API or application programming interface.

If you read the bookish definition from internet or any book you may find it difficult to understand the term API. So lets make it simple by understanding an example :

Lets suppose you have visited to any restaurant and want to make an order.You will not directly go to kitchen for your order, you call a waiter and and waiter takes your order and puts it to the kitchen staff.



Same thing an API does, here like waiter API takes the request from user and calls the server. Server takes the request, process it and returns the responses.

 common examples of APIs are like :

 1. Google map API
2. Twitter API
3. Facebook API

Lets consider one more example to make the picture clear. Lets take an airline ticket booking system where different flights information is available. for example yatra.com or makemytrip.com



These websites do not connect directly to airline companies databases. Obviously nobody allow third party to connect their databases. So how these websites consumes data from jet airways,indigo,Indian airlines,etc......

simple by using their APIs.

Airline companies exposes their information in the form of APIs for exchanging information.The APIs are provided security mechanisms so that any malicious activity can not able to reach database.Suppose we need to take flight timing of jet airways so jet airways APIs gives that information. Similarly if need to find vacant seat information of indigo airlines, indigo application APIs provides the information.So in online travel systems data from different APIs are consumed and displayed there.
